Hon. Shira Scheindlin

Shira A. Scheindlin was nominated by President Bill Clinton on July 28, 1994, as United States District Judge for the Southern District of New York. Before taking her current seat on the Southern District, Judge Scheindlin was Assistant United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York. Previously, she was General Counsel for the New York City Department of Investigation and a partner at Herzfeld & Rubin. She was a Magistrate Judge in the Eastern District of New York and Special Master in the Agent Orange mass tort litigation.
Judge Scheindlin is known for her intellectual acumen, demanding courtroom demeanor, aggressive interpretations of the law, and expertise in mass torts, electronic discovery, and complex litigation. During her tenure, Judge Scheindlin has presided over a number of high profile cases, many of which advanced important new positions in the common law. She was also been a member of the Judicial Conference of the United States Advisory Committee on the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (1998–2005).
Judge Scheindlin is a member of the American Law Institute, and the author of many articles. She is an adjunct Professor of Law at Brooklyn Law School. Her opinions on electronic records management in the case Zubulake v. Warburg LLC have come to be recognized as case law landmarks.

Kevin R. Hopkins

Kevin Hopkins has been a contributor for the special projects division of BusinessWeek since 1991. He also has served as a communications and editorial executive for the White House Office of Science & Technology Policy, the White House Office of Policy Development, the Hudson Institute (a leading public policy research center), and the National Organization on Disability. During the early 1980s, he served as special assistant to White House Counselor Edwin Meese, who later became U.S. Attorney General. From 2002 to 2004, he was editor of Government West magazine, the leading journal covering government operations and policy in Western state and local governments.
